The free demo: scope, length and save transfer
There is a free, permanently available demo — not a timed trial. The official page describes it as roughly ten hours long, running from the Prologue chapter “A Young Girl’s Decision” through to the end of Chapter 1, “A Looming Shadow”.
WHAT THE DEMO COVERS
- The Prologue and Chapter 1, including the Bracer quests and the exploration in that stretch.
- The choice in the Prologue between Scherazard and Agate, which changes dialogue and carries consequences well past Chapter 1.
- Anelace as a playable party member for the Prologue.
- A cast of returning characters from the previous game, most of whom you meet inside the demo.
WHAT THE DEMO LEAVES OUT
- Viewer Mode and Movie Mode are not available in the demo. The official page states this directly.
- The Switch demo is the Switch version. The Switch 2 Edition is not part of the demo, so a Switch 2 owner playing the demo is playing the Switch build.
HOW LONG IT ACTUALLY RUNS
The official figure is about ten hours. Our reads of player reports put the range at roughly 6–7 hours if you move straight through and about 8–10 hours if you do the available side content. The official figure is the one to quote; the range is what players report.
SAVE TRANSFER — HOW IT WORKS
Save data from the demo carries into the full game. The conditions differ by platform:
- Update the full game to the latest version first.
- On PS5 and Steam, load the demo save from the normal “Load Game” flow.
- On Switch, choose “Transfer” from the title screen.
- The demo save and the full game must be on the same PSN account or Nintendo account.
One caveat matters if you care about trophies: on PS5, a save transferred from the demo does not award trophies. If you want the trophy list to register normally, plan for that before you sink hours into the demo.
BONUS FROM 1st CHAPTER SAVE DATA Loading clear data from Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter unlocks the Classic Style SC Costumes at the start of the demo. That is the only kind of save data that crosses between the two products — the sibling remake is a separate game, not a prerequisite.
SPOILER NOTE
The official page carries a spoiler warning for 1st Chapter, and Steam repeats it. The demo opens where the previous game ended. If you have not finished 1st Chapter, the opening stretch of this demo will spoil it.
WHAT WE COULD NOT CONFIRM
Download size per platform. No first-party page read during this batch states the demo’s download size, so it is left blank rather than estimated.
